A YES group has created and distributed a rebuttal leaflet in response to a Scottish Tory MP’s General Election campaign material.

Yes Moffat – based in Dumfries and Galloway – told members on the group's Facebook page that a two-page leaflet had been created to rebuke claims made by David Mundell MP and sent to Moffat residents.

Mundell, an MP since 2005, reportedly wrote “six pledges” on his leaflets which included devolved policy areas. The group said five of the six pledges were matters for the Scottish Government and that, as an MP, Mundell “has no control over” these areas.

Previously, when Mundell was Scotland’s only Conservative MP in 2015, he failed to mention in campaign leaflets that he was standing for the Tory party.

The group points out on the five of the six pledges which are devolved: “However, it largely depends on money allocated from Westminster.”

In a post to the group, organisers said: “Recently, Moffat residents received an election leaflet through our doors from our local MP, David Mundell. In it, he made six ‘pledges’ as part of his push for re-election.

“However, FIVE of these so called ‘pledges’ he has NO control over, these being matters devolved to the Scottish Government.

The National:

“Mr Mundell's leaflet therefore needed to be rebutted, so Yes Moffat in response produced our own leaflet which was delivered by Royal Mail to every household in Moffat and Beattock.”

The group added: “Take note. It would appear that some, if not all, Tory election leaflets are using the same ‘six pledges’ approach.”

The six pledges are:

  • Fix and upgrade major and local roads across our communities – roads are largely devolved.
  • 1000 extra Scottish police officers to tackle crime and a justice system on the side of victims – the police and justice system are devolved.
  • Deliver a tax cut for a majority of Scottish workers and households – tax powers are in part devolved.
  • Faster access to GP and hospital appointments and an end to the patient treatment backlog – the NHS is devolved.
  • Restore Scotland’s education system with increased subject choices and reduced class size – education is devolved.
  • Lower energy bills and protect over 90,000 Scottish jobs in our energy industries – Scottish energy is reserved despite our rich natural resources.

At the bottom of the leaflet, the group states: “We don’t need false pledges and threats to our parliament. We need to have full power over our own affairs.”

One Yes supporter reacted: “This is a fantastic initiative from Yes Moffat and will inspire many other indy groups next time we’re enraged by Yoon lies. Well done all of you.”

Another wrote: “Need more of these rebuttals to the Westminster vows and lies...” with one user adding: “A superb piece of work. Bravo guys.”

Believe in Scotland is heading to Linlithgow this Saturday for the second of its local campaign days across the country.

The organisation is linking up with Yes West Lothian and Yes Linlithgow.

They will be delivering indy material through thousands of doors and have street stalls at Linlithgow Cross to be used as a base for the day.  Activists are asked to arrive at 10:30am to get set up and ready to go.

The SNP are to host their first national council of 2024 this upcoming weekend.

It will be the first gathering of its kind in six years, after one of the key vehicles to create policy within the party was abolished in 2018.

Several members called for the council to be restored as Humza Yousaf became leader of the party and almost one year since the leadership contest came to an end, members will meet in Perth.

I'll be there so if you are around - give me a shout and we can have a chat about all things grassroots!
