THE new proposed constituencies for Scottish Parliament elections have been published – and there are some major changes across the country.

Of Scotland’s 73 constituencies, three are protected under law – Orkney, Shetland, and Na h-Eileanan an Iar. However, the remaining 70 are all up for review.

Of those, more than half (44) have newly drawn boundaries.

In total under the new proposals:

  • 27 remain completely unchanged, keeping both their name and borders. These include Orkney, Shetland, and Na h-Eileanan an Iar, which are protected under law and cannot change
  • Two remain unchanged geographically but have new names (Fife North East and Airdrie, to distinguish from the Westminster constituencies of North East Fife and Airdrie and Shotts)
  • 23 have newly drawn boundaries but the name has been retained
  • 21 completely new constituencies are proposed, with new names and boundaries

Boundaries Scotland has provided a series of maps showing exactly how the new constituencies stack up against the current ones.

They are also asking anyone with a view to get involved with their consultation on the proposed new boundaries – which will run for one month.

Once the new constituencies are confirmed, the revised regional list areas will also be finalised. The process has to be completed by May 1, 2025.

You can see all of the proposed boundary changes below, or on this interactive map provided by Boundaries Scotland.

Newly proposed constituencies are shaded in colour, while the current ones are shown with black borders.
