A PROMINENT Brexiteer has said that he would welcome the likes of Nigel Farage back into the Tory party.

Speaking during his LBC radio show, Jacob Rees-Mogg said that he would welcome the former Ukip leader along with the more "reasonable" elements of the far-right political party.

Rees-Mogg did, however, concede that it may be a little too early for such a reunion, adding that "perhaps a little more purdah is required".

Farage, a member of the Conservatives between 1978 and 1993 quit the party to join Ukip.

After being one of the most prominent figures during the EU referendum campaign he then stepped down as leader and later quit the party in protest at the current leader Gerard Batten's decision to form an alliance with English Defence League co-founder Tommy Robinson.

Rees-Mogg, when asked by a caller into his show whether Farage should be welcomed back into the Conservative Party, said: “I think if the Conservative party could reunite with the reasonable elements of Ukip that would be very good news and Nigel would be part of that.

“I think it would be much easier now than it would have been when he was still a member of Ukip.

The National:

“It may be a little bit early, although personally I hold Nigel in the highest regard and think he was one of these people who was instrumental in delivering Brexit.

“So I think it's almost, but perhaps a little bit more purdah is required.”

Rumours are abound that Farage is planning to form a new political party should the UK Government appear to be ditching plans to go through with Brexit.
