NICOLA Sturgeon has expressed her "contempt" for Labour after Jeremy Corbyn came out in solidarity with thousands women striking in Glasgow over an equal pay dispute.

Pay inequality at Glasgow City Council has been an issue for decades, with thousands of female workers now proceeding with claims following a Court of Session ruling last year.

Last year it was also revealed that, when under the control of Labour, the council spent more than £2.5 million fighting equal pay claims by female council workers over a period of 10 years.

Glasgow City Council has labelled the strike unnecessary and and said it plans to come to an agreement in the coming months.

But after the Labour leader this morning came out in favour, saying that when the women go on strike "it's our duty to support them", the First Minister hit back.

"While I wish the strike wasn’t happening, I have nothing but admiration for the women involved," she tweeted.

"However, I feel contempt for a Labour Party expressing solidarity now when, in power, they took these women to court to deny equal pay. @theSNP and @SusaninLangside are working to fix."
